Chargeback

Fileservers provide a central location for holding and serving company data, often containing the information for a number of different business units on a single fileserver. As the environment grows a business unit’s data may end up scattered across a number of fileservers, with no simple relationship between fileservers and business units. Understanding costs in such an environment is one thing, but charging each business unit for their specific amount of use is another entirely. This problem is often so hard that storage administrators charge flat fees to each business unit to which it provides service, but this method gives users no incentive to moderate their storage usage and so has helped fuel that massive growth in storage usage and associated costs. Storage administrators need the ability to charge business units on their actual use as the first step in bringing storage growth under control.

WysDM for Fileservers provides full reporting and analysis on fileserver chargeback. It monitors resources such as volume (or qtree) utilization and network throughput and provides reporting on current and periodic usage. Reports are available for point usage as well as averages over a period, facilitating a number of methods to provide chargeback reports. WysDM for Fileservers generates reports so that chargeback information is provided automatically, either in a suitable format for viewing by end users or for further processing by billing systems. WysDM’s Predictive Analysis Engine monitors usage of all resources continually to look for anomalies or exceeded limits, and alerts on pre-defined usage or capacity thresholds.
