Fileservers are highly flexible and dynamic infrastructure elements, and as such they have a large number of options and different ways of carrying out most operations. This level of customization gives them the ability to provide the highest levels of performance but also gives them the ability to function poorly when set up incorrectly. To make things more complex, some fileserver settings need to be set to a value complementary to that in the network or on the server to provide the best result. This dependency on external elements, which are often outside the control of the storage administrator, can cause significant issues when configuration settings are changed. Storage administrators must manage change through control process, but this then gives them further issues of managing the change process and providing details of what has changed.

WysDM for Fileservers provides full reporting and analysis on fileserver change management. It monitors fileserver configuration, from options settings to size of volumes, and provides audit reports on changes made to the configuration. Reports are available down to the level of individual changes and up to breakdowns of the most active fileservers in terms of number of changes. WysDM’s Predictive Analysis Engine monitors all of the configuration information continually to look for changes, and alerts when changes take place that fall outside of operational parameters or result in values that could cause outages. It also specifically monitors fileserver clusters to ensure that failover operations will work as expected and not fail due to configuration mismatches.
