Chargeback

Backup administrators are faced daily with the conflicting demands of providing a cost-effective service and ensuring that backups are completed successfully and to schedule. The problem is that there is rarely a direct relationship between the group running the backups and the groups generating the data to be backed up, so the costs of the backup service are recovered through chargeback. However, without the visibility to see where the majority of resources, and hence costs, are used it is impossible to provide per-unit pricing and instead the costs are often charged on a flat basis, distributed evenly among end users regardless of amount of data backed up or level of service required. The result is that backup administrators do not even attempt cost control, end users have no incentives to reduce the amount of data backed up, and data volumes increase unchecked.

WysDM for Backups provides full reporting and analysis for chargeback. It gathers details of all backup jobs and uses it to provide reports from per-backup charges to summaries based on business unit, cost code, or other grouping. WysDM can provide chargeback information based on any variable or number of variables, such as amount of data backed up, backup duration, or data retention period. The Predictive Analysis Engine monitors the data continually, picking up on issues such as significantly higher costs incurred compared to previous months, and alerts when these conditions are met. WysDM for Backups also generates chargeback details automatically and saves it in a format suitable for further processing by billing systems.
